Sunday in Waterville

Stupendous. Lovely. Amazing. Unbelievable. I think you just changed my life.

These are all words heard after flights aboard a Yellow Wings vintage training airplane. For the last week, Yellow Wings has been hanging out in Greenwood, NS, sharing stories with some 600 cadets spending the summer on base. Curious military personnel have also come out to see the airplanes, and on Friday a Mr. Finley decided he better go up for a ride in the Finch that bears his name (whether or not they are related has yet to be determined). So excited was he after his flight that …

Sharing stories in Greenwood

Yellow Wings just completed our second day on the ground in Greenwood, NS.

Yesterday we toured young air cadets around the airplanes, and took a very special gentleman for a ride; Art « Sparky » Traverse is a spry 90-year-old who learned to fly on Tiger Moths during the Second World War. After flying 68.5 hours in the Tiger, Sparky went on to be an instructor in the BCATP, training Navigators in the twin-engine Anson. He absolutely loved his flight and Vintage Wings was extremely honored to be able to take such a man back in time aboard our aircraft.

We also took …

From Fredericton to Halifax

The YW fleet is now repositioned at Halifax Stanfield Int’l Airport, NS. We got in late last night after waking up to depart Fredericton early in the morning. Why so long to go 180miles you ask? We may go slow, but we are not THAT slow!

In Fredericton we had to put some air in a soft rear Cornell tail wheel, but of course life is never that simple. We required a valve stem extender, which required some searching to find. Meanwhile while pushing the Tiger Moth out of
the hangar we …

Nothing Ordinary in Fredericton

What a day in Fredericton! The low pressure system and cold front that caused us to cease operations early yesterday was long gone by the time this morning rolled around. Today presented with light winds, clear skies, bright sun and puffy cotton all clouds. It also provided a bit of relief from the scorching humidity of last week.

Due to excellent media coverage yesterday, the crowds came out in droves to see the pretty yellow airplanes.

Dolores Furlong, an enthusiastic young lady in her sixties, stood watching at the sidelines as the planes came and went. Watching, that is, until …

Lots of media out in Freddy

Tuesday, July 17 started out foggy with a low cloud base. Yellow Wings personnel began the day early with a 6:15am spot on CBC Fredericton’s morning show, Morning Information, with Terry Seguin.

Roving reporter Amy Leitner, from the CBC six o’clock news, then joined us for a flight in the Finch just as the low scud drifted off. Amy and her cameraman Dave ended up spending most of the day with the Yellow Airplanes, filming, talking with veterans and basically catching the « Yellow bug. »

Daily Gleaner reporters and photographers also showed up, and between media interviews,  sponsored rides (the Harvard was today’s …

Yellow Wings Gets Ready to Head East

Freshly-soloed Cornell pilot Goran Jakovljevic (just call him Gord) is all smiles.(Photo HF)

Less than a week to go before the yellow birds pack up and take up a heading of 090 degrees; lots of time left and lots of things left to do.

The calendar of events has been set in stone for some time now, and can be viewed at www.yellowings.ca, under the heading “Calendar.” We officially kick off our tour in Woodstock, NB, …
