Yellow Wings 2013 Cross Canada Air Cadet Tribute

Yellow Wings 2012 has not quite wrapped up (our debrief meeting takes place this afternoon), but we are already well underway looking ahead to next summer.

Coming in 2013, Raytheon Canada Limited has partnered with Vintage Wings of Canada to present the Cross Canada Air Cadet Tribute. This program will span an entire country, with 3 main bases: west, central and east, that will reach out to all cadets in the RCAF Air Cadet program.

The program will consist of …

Day One of St. John Airshow & Open House

The weather yesterday didn’t co-operate and the Airshow was postponed until today.

We started the morning with repairs to the Harvard wheel, many thanks to the Atlantic Flight Centre crew who assisted Angie in getting the wheel off and fixed.  Angie was a very busy lady; after fixing the Harvard, then off she went to fix the Sabre.  Hats off to Angie for the many long hours she has put in to keep the planes flying.

The Open House and static display went ahead with close to 300 people in attendance.  …

Yellow Wings Photo Session

This morning Yellow Wings crew did a photo shoot over the Confederation Bridge. The sky was blue with not a cloud in sight. An awesome day for flying.

Rob did a formation pre-flight brief with the YW crew and the photo plane. At 11:25 am approximately, we took off to the sky with the Cornell in lead and the Finch and Tigermoth on the wings. The Harvard brought up the rear.

The guys did a great job.

After a successful photo session, we broke off to head to St. John, NB.

A lovely day to fly!

Just another evening in Summerside, PEI

We no sooner arrived in Summerside, PEI on Sunday and Rob set to work doing two sponsorship rides in the Harvard. George took a lucky participant in the Cornell.

The three lucky individuals were ecstatic when they landed from their flights. A magnificent way to see their homeland from a Yellow Harvard
and a Cornell; an experience that may never happen again.

It is so much fun seeing the look on their faces and hearing the excitement in their voices! A pleasure to witness! Debbie Erdos

Maritime Weather in Yarmouth

Yellow Wings repositioned to Yarmouth, the western-most point in Nova Scotia, Monday afternoon.

Tuesday morning we were set up and in position bright and early to do some media rides to promote the 75th Anniversary of Yarmouth International Airport, a large, beautiful airport and former training base. Following the media rides, we had an open house, where the public could come access the aircraft, sponsor a ride and purchase tshirts and other memorabilia to keep the airplanes flying. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and light winds. That afternoon the Snowbirds arrived, …

One Month of Yellow Left

Having just finished an event in Debert and Miramichi, the Yellow Wings crew overnighted in Moncton and was up bright and early this morning to…..sit around and wait…..for the weather. Hurry up and ….wait.

Finally after lunch the weather cleared enough to send the Harvard out for some reconnaissance. With favorable reports, the rest of the fleet launched onwards to Waterville. After a stunning hop over Cape Split, we refueled and briefed our next flight down to Yarmouth, NS.

We sent the Tiger Moth out first, followed by the Cornell, Finch and …

Sunny skies in Moncton

Today was day 1 of 2 in Moncton, NB. We are operating out of Moncton Flight College, and are open to the public 10-4pm. Blue skies and light winds made for a great day of flying today, Sat, Aug, 4, 2012. Although the exact numbers have yet to be crunched, we shared the magic of flight with upwards of 20 members of Vintage Wings. Out east the Harvard is still the favourite, but today all of the aircraft got their fill. All except the Tiger Moth. An unusual noise yesterday afternoon prompted …

The story of the camera case and what we do with our time off

Days are long on the road, standing out under the blazing sun, sweating in our flight suits. The crew usually falls into bed exhausted at the end of the day, and while most may not admit it, it is usually before 10pm. But occasionally we have an afternoon or even a whole day free of airplane duties. What do we do with our spare time? We dine with Retired Generals and at quaint little schnitzel houses, get our photos taken with giant lobsters, watch the tide come in the Bay of …

Sunday in Waterville

Stupendous. Lovely. Amazing. Unbelievable. I think you just changed my life.

These are all words heard after flights aboard a Yellow Wings vintage training airplane. For the last week, Yellow Wings has been hanging out in Greenwood, NS, sharing stories with some 600 cadets spending the summer on base. Curious military personnel have also come out to see the airplanes, and on Friday a Mr. Finley decided he better go up for a ride in the Finch that bears his name (whether or not they are related has yet to be determined). So excited was he after his flight that …

Sharing stories in Greenwood

Yellow Wings just completed our second day on the ground in Greenwood, NS.

Yesterday we toured young air cadets around the airplanes, and took a very special gentleman for a ride; Art “Sparky” Traverse is a spry 90-year-old who learned to fly on Tiger Moths during the Second World War. After flying 68.5 hours in the Tiger, Sparky went on to be an instructor in the BCATP, training Navigators in the twin-engine Anson. He absolutely loved his flight and Vintage Wings was extremely honored to be able to take such a man back in time aboard our aircraft.

We also took …
